Pailune Region Guide: Map, Bosses, Secrets & Cold Prep
Explore Crimson Desert's Pailune region with all key locations, bosses, secrets, cold-resistance prep, Black Bears quests, and route order.
Pailune is the frozen northern region of Pywel — a harsh land of heavy snowfall, blizzards, and treacherous mountain passes. This is the ancestral homeland of the Greymanes (your mercenary company), now overrun by the hostile Black Bears clan led by Myurdin. Coming to Pailune means stepping into the heart of the main story's central conflict.

How to Reach Pailune
Pailune becomes accessible during the Chapter 7 storyline. The region is locked behind story progression — you cannot visit it freely beforehand. Once Chapter 7 begins, the path north from the Hernand region opens up. Expect enemies significantly tougher than Hernand.
Cold and Ice Mechanics
Pailune's freezing temperatures affect gameplay:
- Stamina regeneration is reduced in cold areas without Ice Resistance
- Blizzards periodically reduce visibility to near zero
- Equip a Cloak and eat Ice Resistance food (Fishball Soup provides Lv 4) before exploring
- Some interiors and campfires provide warmth that removes the cold debuff
Key Locations
Greymane Base Camp
Your faction's camp in Pailune. This is the regional hub where you plan operations, manage recruits, and prepare for the fight against the Black Bears.
Vannstein Lake
A frozen lake that serves as a major landmark. The area around the lake contains gathering nodes and side quest triggers.
Snowwind Cave
Contains a treasure chest hidden behind a waterfall. Requires the Stab ability to safely pass through the water curtain. Inside, you find the Grand Meal Recipe — one of the best cooking recipes in the game.
Kingshield Mountains
The mountainous area where you encounter One-Armed Ludvig, a key story boss. Difficult terrain with narrow paths and ambush points.
Pailune Castle
Site of the Ludvig boss fight during the "Dawn" main quest. A fortified castle that serves as a major story location.
Ashclaw Keep
Where the climactic Myurdin boss fight takes place during the "Decisive Battle" quest. This is one of the most important story locations in the game.
Wayward Woods
Home to the Mistwood Hunters, a group of poachers. Contains side quest content and hunting opportunities.
Spire of Ringing Truth
Location of the optional boss Priscus the Ancient. Climb the tower, shoot the bell at the top to break through the floor, and descend to the basement for the boss fight.
Do not miss Snowwind Cave. The Grand Meal Recipe found inside is one of the strongest cooking recipes in the game, and the cave entrance is easy to walk past without noticing. Look for a waterfall and use the Stab ability to pass through it.
Ancestral and Ancient Ruins
Pailune is dense with explorable ruins, and they fall into two groups. The Ancestors' Ruins is a trap-filled dungeon that hides one of Kliff's best bows. Separately, a set of Ancient Ruins puzzle chambers each reward an Abyss Artifact (also called an Abyss Cresset) and unlock a fast-travel point once solved.
Pailune Ancestors' Ruins
Hidden in the mountains north of the Silver Wolf Mountains. The entrance is easy to walk past — it is a small hole surrounded by tufts of grass that you drop down into, not a visible doorway. Inside is a short but deadly dungeon with a collapsing floor, spinning blades, swaying braziers, and spike traps. Navigate past them to loot the Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow, one of the strongest bows in the game.
Black Wall Ruins
Located in the Black Wall mountains east of Pailune City. Use Nature's Grasp to lift the stone slab blocking the entrance. Solving it rewards an Abyss Artifact and activates the local fast-travel point.
Hidden Chamber of Wisdom
Found in central Pailune, southwest of the Sanctum of Solace, with the entrance set into the north wall close to the road. The puzzle uses elemental mechanisms — trigger the wind, lightning, water, and fire symbols (the Force Current skill works) to open it. Reward: an Abyss Artifact and a fast-travel point.
Five-Finger Mountain Icy Ruins
In northwestern Pailune, between First-Finger Lake and the Cloister of Ruination. Break the ice sheet, drain the water, then use the Stab skill to slide the blocks into the correct picture. Reward: an Abyss Artifact and a fast-travel point.
Treasure and Secrets
Pailune's best-known treasure is the chest behind the waterfall in Snowwind Cave — use the Stab ability to pass through the water curtain and claim the Grand Meal Recipe (full details under Key Locations above). Beyond it, the region's richest treasure site is Stellen Manor.
Stellen Manor Strongboxes
Stellen Manor sits in southern Pailune — northeast of Drakesfall Gorge and south of Pailune City. The manor holds multiple strongboxes, including a chain in which a closet key from one box opens a locked closet elsewhere in the building, so clear every room after solving the first.
Collectibles
Beyond named chests, Pailune is seeded with the collectible systems found across Pywel — Crafting Books, Cooking Recipes, Memory Fragments, Elixirs, and Abyss Artifacts.
A common mix-up: the Soul Spear in the Tomb of Frozen Souls is sometimes listed as a Pailune secret, but it is actually found on the Hernand side of the mountains, not in Pailune.

Levels are not displayed in-game; treat boss difficulty as gear-tier guidelines rather than fixed caps.
Saigord the Staglord is sometimes assumed to be a Pailune boss, but he is fought at Icemoor Castle Ruins on the Hernand side of the border — see the Hernand region guide and the Saigord strategy guide.
Pailune is significantly harder than the Hernand region. Refine your weapons to at least Level 4, stock at least 100 cooked meals, and expand your inventory so you can carry enough cloaks, Ice Resistance food, and combat consumables before entering the region. The Black Bears enemies hit hard, and the cold reduces your Stamina regeneration on top of that.
Factions
Black Bears
The hostile faction controlling Pailune, led by Myurdin. They murdered the previous regional leader Jian and seized power. The main storyline revolves around reclaiming Pailune from their control.
Beigian Tribe
Located in southeastern Pailune. Known for ritualistic food preparation traditions. Friendly faction with unique trade options.
Other Regional Factions
- Knytlingar Clan — Regional group
- Longleaf Tribe — Regional group
- Skoghorn Tribe — Regional group
- Stjar Clan — Regional group
- Pailune Militia — The former military force, weakened after Jian's death
The Toll of Pailune
The region has a map-revealing bell called the Toll of Pailune. However, it is only activatable after completing Chapter 7 — unlike Hernand where the bell is available early. Until then, explore manually and rely on Blinding Flash to find points of interest.
Mounts
Pailune-specific mounts include the Greymane Warhorse, Pailune Snow Bear, and Frost Raptor. These mounts handle the cold terrain better than standard Hernand horses.
