Hernand Region Exploration Guide
Explore Hernand: 20+ bosses, three Toll of Pywel bells, key locations, and a full exploration checklist.
Hernand is the opening region of Crimson Desert and the foundation for the entire main story. It hosts over 20 named boss encounters (7 main-quest fights from Chapters 1–6 plus more than a dozen optional, faction, and world bosses), three bells from the Toll of Pywel series, and around a dozen Abyss Nexus fast-travel anchors. This guide covers every location, every boss, and a full exploration checklist.
How to Reach Hernand
Hernand is the starting region — you arrive here as soon as the prologue ends. The unwinnable tutorial fight against Myurdin at Hills of No Return (the "In Ashes" quest) is your introduction to the main antagonist, after which you join the Greymanes and begin Chapter 1 in earnest. No story gating, no level requirement — Hernand unlocks immediately.
Hernand Region Exploration Guide
A complete sweep of Hernand covers five things: progress the main story through six chapters, ring all three Hernand bells (Hernand, Scholastone, Calphade — the region's slice of the Toll of Pywel set), liberate the optional faction strongholds (Roothold, Karin Quarry, The Eldertree, Fort Hellwood, Southern Quarry, and others), activate every Abyss Nexus fast-travel anchor you pass, and clear Greymane's 27 Hernand Commissions before leaving — community walkthroughs flag this as the single largest inventory-slot payout in the game. The location list below is grouped by sub-region; the Hernand Exploration Checklist at the bottom summarises what to tick off before moving on.
Key Locations
Only locations cross-verified by Game8 and Fextralife (or equivalent Tier 1 sources) are listed. Grouped by sub-region for easier navigation.
Central Hernand
City of Hernand
The main hub city. Houses the central plaza (Matthias boss fight is widely placed here during Chapter 2's "For Honor"), the Tavern, the Notice Board, and the Hernand bell clocktower in the northern part of Hernand town. Bluemont Manor, the estate of Count Leon Roberts, sits in the south-west of the city and contains a strongbox puzzle.
Hernand Castle
The fortified seat inside the City of Hernand. Site of the Demenessian Delegation banquet and the Kearush the Slayer boss fight during Chapter 5's "Uninvited Guest."
Hills of No Return
Open hills north of Hernand Town. Location of the prologue Myurdin tutorial — an unwinnable scripted fight that introduces the main antagonist before the Greymanes recruit you.
Northern & North-East Hernand
Karin Quarry
The primary mining site, north-east of City of Hernand. Iron Ore and Copper Ore are abundant here. The "Stolen Quarry" liberation questline ends in the Marni's Excavatron boss fight inside the quarry.
Roothold (Roothold Stronghold)
A fortified stronghold in the north-east. The "Liberate Roothold" objective is one of the first optional faction missions you can pick up, and post-liberation Roothold becomes a seat of House Celeste operations.
The Eldertree
A fortified ancient tree, House Celeste–aligned after liberation. Site of the Gwen Kraber boss during the "Frozen Eldertree" faction quest.
Mountain of Frozen Souls (Frozen Soul Mountain)
Snow-covered peak accessed via the northern paths. The Reed Devil boss is fought at the summit during Chapter 3's "Dance with the Devil" / "The Face Behind the Mask."
Forest of Wolves
A wooded area north of Sage's Peak. Site of the Black Fang legendary wolf encounter from the House Celeste questline.
Eastern Hernand
Goldleaf Guildhouse (Unicorn Cliff)
Headquarters of the Goldleaf Merchants on top of Unicorn Cliff, south of the Nas River. The Kailok the Hornsplitter boss fight takes place here during Chapter 2's "Cheers Echoing from the Edge" / "End of Greed."
Nas River Fishing Dock
Fishing spot south-east of City of Hernand on the Nas River. Run by Finley at the Hernand Fishing Shop; the main source of cooking-recipe ingredients in the region.
Pororin Village
Small settlement east of the central hub, frequently used as a fast-travel anchor.
Southern & South-West Hernand
Scholastone Institute
A magical academy in south-west Hernand. Site of the Tenebrum aerial boss during the Chapter 4 main quest "Gate to the Otherworld". The Scholastone bell — one of three Hernand bells in the Toll of Pywel set — sits in the pagoda at the end of the garden path here.
Sanctum of Absolution
A ruined sanctum south of Scholastone Institute. Houses the Antumbra's Sword boss during the "Cloister of Ruination" optional quest.
Southern Quarry (Grace Estate)
A mining estate south of the central hub. Site of the Cubewalker Lithus boss during the "A Rumor in the Southern Quarry" liberation arc (House Felix faction). Progressing the Greymane "Embers of Return" camp-upgrade chain is a prerequisite to unlock the boss quest.
City of Calphade / Calphade Castle
A contested city in the north of the Hernand region. The Cassius Morten boss fight during Chapter 6's "The Unyielding Shields" / "Cracks in the Shield" takes place at Calphade Castle. The Calphade bell — the third of Hernand's Toll of Pywel bells — is in the Church of Calphade in Thalwynd Village, just west of Calphade Castle; note that it can only be rung before or after Chapter 6, not during.
Vellua
A coastal fishing village south of Hernand. The Sir Catfish optional boss is encountered here during the Vellua Fishermen's Guild quest "Beyond the Silent Waves."
Western Hernand
Fort Perwin
A fortified outpost west of Hernand, near the Precipice of Echoes. Houses the Crimson Nightmare optional boss — not Kearush, contrary to older guides.
Fort Warspike
A fortress north of Witch Woods. Site of the Walter Lanford boss from the House Serkis faction questline.
Fort Hellwood
A fortress west of Glenbright Manor. Site of the Hemon Beindel boss during "The Rabid Hound of Hellwood" quest. The encounter is gated by the Hernandian Parish of Solumen "Missing Relic" / "Reliquary of Saint Senia" chain — Tier 1 sources variously attribute the trigger to both Parish of Solumen and House Celeste, so the boss is best treated as a cross-faction fight.
Glenbright Manor
A noble estate west of Hernand, central to several House Celeste storylines.
Witch Woods
A dense forest north of Fort Warspike, populated with mid-level enemies.
Far Frontier & Border Zones
Hoenmark Ruins
Frozen ruins in the far north-west. Houses the Beloth the Darksworn boss during "Wraith in the Frost" / "White Blizzard."
Drakesfall Castle
A castle in the north of Hernand. Site of the Giath boss during the "Masked Hunter" House Celeste questline.
Icemoor Castle Ruins
Snow-covered ruined castle. Site of the Saigord the Staglord boss, tied to a House Serkis faction chain (aggregators list the trigger quest as "Lord Amidst the Ruins").
Arboria Castle / Arburis Forest
A spider-infested castle in the north. Site of the Queen Spider boss during "Queen's Nest" / "Queen of the Silkspun Citadel."
Everfrost / Frostclaw Cave
An icy cave area on the Hernand frontier. The Ice Walker world boss appears above the waterfall here.
Silent Falls Hideout (Hook Rapids)
On the Hernand/Demeniss border — the Grave Walker world boss spawns at this location.
Ruined Chapel (Steel Mountains)
Also called the Bloodied Sanctum. Site of the Sizlek the Insatiable boss during the "Mysterious Arrow" / Parish of Solumen questline.
Redfox Forest (Stoneback Crab Wetlands)
A forested wetlands area on the Hernand frontier. The Redfox Trading Post (just north of City of Delesyia) gates entry through the Redfox Merchants questline — listen to the bard Diederik to begin "The Wolf's Ballad," which leads into "The Queen's Lake." Stoneback Crab Wetlands inside Redfox Forest is the arena of the Queen Stoneback Crab, widely cited as Hernand's hardest world boss. See the Queen Stoneback Crab guide for the climb-and-stab routing on her shell crystals.
Lake Kharonso
A glacial lake in Hernand inhabited by the Kharonso Troll Alliance. The Vordis, the Runewalker ("Runewalker Vordis") world boss is summoned by solving the puzzle of Lake Kharonso during the "Destroyed Barrier Stone of the Lake" / "The Sleeping Heart" quest chain — repairing the barrier stones triggers the encounter. Use Axiom Force to pull the prism from his head for damage windows.
Ring the Hernand bell early — it sits inside the clocktower in the northern part of Hernand town and reveals the regional map plus all visible Abyss Nexus icons. Doing this first turns the rest of the region into a clean checklist instead of blind exploration.
Toll of Pywel Bells in Hernand
Hernand contains three of the eight Toll of Pywel bells. Ring each to reveal that sub-region's map.
| Bell | Location | What it reveals |
|---|---|---|
| The Hernand bell | Clocktower in the northern part of Hernand town | Central Hernand map and Abyss Nexus icons |
| The Scholastone bell | Pagoda at the end of the garden path inside Scholastone Institute | South-west Hernand sub-region map |
| The Calphade bell | Church of Calphade in Thalwynd Village, west of Calphade Castle (cannot be rung during Chapter 6) | Northern (Calphade) sub-region map |
All Hernand Bosses
Hernand contains over 20 named boss encounters — 7 main-quest fights tied to Chapters 1 through 6, plus more than a dozen optional, faction, and world bosses across the open map. Counts vary between Tier 1 aggregators (Game8 and GameRant explicitly list 16 region bosses by their own classification) depending on whether prologue tutorials and world bosses are included.

Main-Quest Boss Spotlights
The four most-searched Hernand main-quest fights, with corrected locations and the core mechanic to know.
Myurdin (prologue — Hills of No Return)
This is the scripted tutorial at the very start of the game — Myurdin cannot be defeated here. The fight teaches dodge timing and ends when scripted regardless of your performance. The real Myurdin rematch happens at Ashclaw Keep in Pailune during Chapter 7 — see the Myurdin boss guide and the endgame Avatar of Umbra fight.
Kailok the Hornsplitter (Goldleaf Guildhouse)
Chapter 2's climactic fight on top of Unicorn Cliff. Kailok is a brute who counter-staggers if you button-mash. The opening sequence has a Grindstone near the arena — interact with it for a temporary Attack buff that carries into the fight. Use Force Palm to break his counter stance and only punish after his full combo strings finish. Full strategy in the Kailok guide.
Reed Devil (Mountain of Frozen Souls)
The Chapter 3 climax combines a standard duel with a totem-destruction mechanic: during the second phase, five totems must be destroyed with Focused Shot or Charged Shot or the boss heals back. Parry his swift sword combos at close range and dodge his sword waves at distance. See the Reed Devil guide for the full totem routing.
Kearush the Slayer (Hernand Castle, "Uninvited Guest")
Chapter 5's final Hernand boss. The fight is triggered inside Hernand Castle during the Demenessian Delegation banquet quest — not at Fort Perwin as some older guides claim. Kearush hits hard enough to one-shot underprepared players. The canonical strategy is to grapple to walls to dodge his slam attacks and use the Back Hang skill for high-damage windows; play defensively during his Phase 3 desperation. Full breakdown in the Kearush strategy guide.
Do not attempt Kearush the Slayer until your primary weapon is refined to at least +5 and you have pushed Health to 5. Kearush is significantly harder than every other Hernand boss and the only "Legendary"-difficulty fight in the region.

Counts vary between Tier 1 aggregators (Game8 and GameRant list 16 region bosses by their own classification) depending on whether prologue tutorials and world bosses are included. The full list is in the All Hernand Bosses section above.
How do you explore the Hernand region in Crimson Desert?
Start with the main-quest path through Hills of No Return, City of Hernand, Goldleaf Guildhouse, Mountain of Frozen Souls, and Scholastone Institute, ringing the Hernand bell early to reveal the regional map. Then sweep the optional liberation quests at Roothold, Karin Quarry, The Eldertree, Fort Hellwood, and Southern Quarry, fish at Nas River, mine at Karin Quarry, and ring the Scholastone bell and Calphade bell. Activate every Abyss Nexus fast-travel anchor you pass for cheap region-wide travel.
Where is Kearush the Slayer in Crimson Desert?
Kearush the Slayer is fought inside Hernand Castle during the Chapter 5 main quest "Uninvited Guest," which is triggered at the Demenessian Delegation banquet. He is not at Fort Perwin — Fort Perwin houses the optional Crimson Nightmare boss.
Where is the Queen Stoneback Crab in Crimson Desert?
The Queen Stoneback Crab is a Hernand world boss found at Stoneback Crab Wetlands in Redfox Forest, widely cited as Hernand's hardest world boss. Access is unlocked through the Redfox Trading Post (north of City of Delesyia) via the "The Wolf's Ballad" quest, after which "The Queen's Lake" quest points you to her arena. The fight requires climbing onto her shell and destroying the embedded crystals — see the full Queen Stoneback Crab strategy guide for the climb-and-stab routing.
What should I finish in Hernand before moving on?
Ring all three Hernand bells (Hernand, Scholastone, and Calphade), defeat the seven main-quest bosses from Chapters 1 through 6, sweep the faction liberation chains at Roothold, Karin Quarry, Southern Quarry, Fort Hellwood, and Forest of Wolves, and — most importantly — clear Greymane's 27 Hernand Commissions before leaving. Community walkthroughs flag the Greymane Commissions as the single largest inventory-slot payout in the game.
What chapters does Hernand cover, and what region comes next?
Hernand is the starting region and stays in play across main-story Chapters 1 through 6, with the final region boss Cassius Morten fought at Calphade Castle in Chapter 6. According to community guides such as crimsondesert.app, the typical progression after Hernand runs Demeniss → Pailune (story-gated in Chapter 7) → Delesyia → Crimson Desert → Abyss; Demeniss is geographically adjacent and reachable early, while Pailune unlocks during Chapter 7 of the main quest.
