Crimson Desert Boss Rematch System Live Explained

Patch 1.05.00 makes Boss Rematch live for 69 bosses, with Reminisce and Resonate modes, Memory Fragments, and no separate loot. Here is exactly how it works.

Boss Rematch went live with Patch 1.05.00 on May 2, 2026. Pearl Abyss says you can now rematch 69 bosses, with two distinct modes and a strict no-loot rule that frames the system as a practice and challenge tool.

This update supersedes our earlier Boss Rematches Explained preview, which was written before the system shipped. The text below describes the live system as Pearl Abyss documented it in the 1.05.00 patch note.

Quick answer

Pearl Abyss confirms:

  • you can rematch 69 bosses
  • rematches use Memory Fragments, which "become active after a boss is defeated"
  • there are two modes: Reminisce and Resonate
  • you can rematch with any of the three protagonists: Kliff, Oongka, or Damiane
  • consumables used during a rematch are restored to their prior state once the fight ends
  • rematches do not drop separate loot

How to start a rematch

Pearl Abyss writes that Memory Fragments are the entry point for rematches, and that they "become active after a boss is defeated." That means the rematch flow only opens for a boss after you have completed the original encounter on at least one save.

To start a rematch:

  1. Defeat the boss in the main game.
  2. Open the world map or minimap; the patch note for 1.04.00 already added Memory Fragment icons there.
  3. Activate the matching Memory Fragment.
  4. Choose Reminisce or Resonate before starting the fight.

Pearl Abyss does not publish a deeper inventory UI or menu screenshot in the 1.05.00 patch note, so the exact in-game text and layout above describes the activation flow consistent with the Memory Fragment system that already shipped.

Reminisce vs Resonate

The two rematch modes work very differently.

Reminisce

Pearl Abyss describes Reminisce as:

"Fight the boss exactly as they were when you first encountered them."

That is the throwback mode. The boss has the level, stats, and behavior they had in the original encounter, regardless of how strong your character is now. This is the mode you pick when you want to relive a specific fight, practice the original moveset, or run a clean replay for video.

Resonate

Pearl Abyss describes Resonate as:

"The boss's stats will scale to match the player's progression. This only applies if the player's stats are higher than the original boss's stats."

Two things matter here.

First, scaling is one-directional: if your stats are below the original boss's stats, the boss is not scaled down. So a low-level character cannot use Resonate to make an early boss easier; it stays at its original difficulty floor.

Second, scaling is applied to the boss's stats. Pearl Abyss does not mention adding new patterns or attacks for Resonate; the patch note language is consistent with stat scaling only.

If you want a real challenge fight against an early-game boss after gearing up, Resonate is the mode that gives it to you.

Any character can fight any rematch

Pearl Abyss writes:

"You can attempt a rematch with any character (Kliff, Oongka, Damiane)"

That matters because some bosses in the main story are encountered with only one of the three protagonists. With rematches, you can take the same boss with Kliff's combat tools, Oongka's combat tools, or Damiane's combat tools, even if you originally fought them with a different character.

Why no separate loot

Pearl Abyss writes:

"In Rematch, any consumables used will be restored to their prior state once the battle ends, and no separate loot can be obtained."

That is intentional. Two design implications follow:

  • you can throw your full consumable rotation at a rematch without losing inventory
  • rematches are not a farming method for boss-drop weapons or materials

Combined, that frames Boss Rematch as a practice and challenge system. If you wanted to grind a specific boss for drops, that flow does not change with 1.05.00.

What is "active" after a rematch

Pearl Abyss says Memory Fragments "become active after a boss is defeated." The patch note language treats them as the activation key for the rematch flow, not as a one-time consumable. So defeating the boss in the main game permanently unlocks the rematch path for that boss.

Pearl Abyss does not say that rematches consume the fragment, expire, or have a daily cap.

How rematches interact with progression

Because:

  • consumables are restored
  • no separate loot drops
  • Resonate only scales the boss up, never down

Pearl Abyss has effectively kept rematches sealed off from the normal progression loop. You cannot use rematches to break the difficulty curve, farm gear, or burn through consumables for free advantage. That is consistent with framing rematches as practice content.

Rematches and the rest of patch 1.05.00

The 1.05.00 patch note also lists multiple boss-fight fixes that improve the rematch experience for those specific fights, verbatim:

  • "Fixed an issue with Corrupted Caliburn displaying abnormal attack patterns occasionally during combat."
  • "Improved combo fluidity when attacking the Storm Crusher and Thunder Tank bosses."
  • "Fixed an issue where the Abyss Nexus would reset upon saving and loading after defeating Abyss Kutum."
  • "A warning message will now display if you move out of the combat area during the fight against Ludvig."
  • "Fixed an issue where certain bosses would not take damage from bows and ranged attacks while staggered."

If you are using rematches as a ranged-build practice ground, the last one is the most important — stagger windows are now reliable damage windows for bows and ranged attacks again.

FAQ

Do rematches require Memory Fragments to physically pick up?

Pearl Abyss says fragments "become active after a boss is defeated." The patch note treats them as the activation key for the rematch system, not as a one-time consumable.

Can Resonate make an early boss harder than my main run?

Yes, if your current stats exceed the boss's original stats. Pearl Abyss says scaling only applies "if the player's stats are higher than the original boss's stats."

Can I farm boss drops via rematches?

No. Pearl Abyss explicitly says "no separate loot can be obtained" in rematches.

Do consumables used in a rematch carry over to the main game?

No. Pearl Abyss says "any consumables used will be restored to their prior state once the battle ends."

Can I rematch a boss with a character I never fought it with?

Yes. Pearl Abyss says you can attempt a rematch "with any character (Kliff, Oongka, Damiane)."

Conclusion

Boss Rematch in patch 1.05.00 is exactly what Pearl Abyss promised in the 1.04.00 window: 69 bosses, two modes, full character flexibility, no consumable cost, and no loot. It is built for practice and challenge runs, not farming, and it is now the live reference for any future Crimson Desert boss-fight content on this site.
