How to Beat White Bear of the High Mountains in Crimson Desert
Complete strategy guide for the White Bear of the High Mountains boss fight in Crimson Desert — a Pailune optional boss at Fort Askelund, found during The Unending Threat of the Black Bears quest.
White Bear of the High Mountains is a massive optional bear boss found at Fort Askelund in Pailune, encountered during The Unending Threat of the Black Bears faction quest for the Pailune Militia. This fight rewards patience and punishes aggression — its dangerous spin attacks make keeping distance the priority.
Location
White Bear of the High Mountains is located at Fort Askelund in the Pailune region. This encounter is part of The Unending Threat of the Black Bears faction quest for the Pailune Militia.
Boss Mechanics
Spin Attacks
White Bear of the High Mountains frequently performs wide spin attacks that cover a large area around it. These are the most dangerous attacks in the encounter and cannot be reliably parried — they must be dodged or avoided by maintaining distance.
The spin attack has two variants:
- Short spin — One rotation, recovers quickly
- Extended spin — Two or three rotations, covers a wider area
After the extended spin, the bear has a longer recovery animation — this is the primary punish window.
Combo Strings
Like other bears, White Bear of the High Mountains performs ground combo strings. The key difference from White Bearclaw is that this bear's attacks cover more range and deal heavier damage. Do not attempt to parry the full combo — dodge to the side and counter-attack after the final strike in each string.
Charge
The bear charges in a straight line across significant distance. This is highly telegraphed (the bear lowers its head and pauses before charging). Dodge to the side — not backward — to avoid it and punish the recovery.
Strategy
Core Principle — Keep Distance and Punish Combos
The fight philosophy here is: maintain safe distance, attack only after full combo strings finish.
- Do not press in aggressively. The bear's reach is long enough that premature attacks lead to trades, and these trades are not in your favor.
- Stay at the edge of the bear's attack range — close enough to punish recoveries, far enough to react to the spin.
Handling Spin Attacks
When the spin animation begins:
- Sprint away from the bear immediately
- Do not try to dodge through the spin — the hitbox is too wide
- After the extended spin's full rotation finishes, close distance and attack during the recovery
The bear's spin attack is the warning signal to create distance, not to attack. Players who try to dodge through the spin and counter-attack are frequently caught by the second or third rotation of the extended variant.
Attacking After Combo Strings
After each ground combo string ends:
- Close distance immediately during the final swing's recovery
- Land two to three strong hits
- Retreat before the next attack begins
Do not attempt to stay in melee range after your punish — the bear recovers and begins its next combo quickly.
The charge attack can close the distance you created during a retreat. If the bear charges while you are repositioning, dodge sideways — the charge tracks in a straight line and is easy to avoid if you are not running directly away from it.
Recommended Gear
Pailune Frost Staff
Staff — ATK TBD
Ranged options let you deal damage during repositioning phases.
Abyss Halberd
Halberd — ATK TBD
Extended reach lets you punish recoveries from safer distances.
Skull Crusher Hammer
Hammer — ATK TBD
Heavy single hits maximize damage during the limited punish windows.
Loot Drops
| Item | Drop Rate | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Split Tooth | 100% | A trophy item from the White Bear of the High Mountains. Can be used for crafting or as proof of the kill for the Pailune Militia faction quest. |
Summary
- Keep distance — this fight rewards space management over aggression
- Never try to dodge through the spin attack; sprint away instead
- Punish extended spin recovery with two to three hits, then retreat
- Wait for full combo strings to finish before counter-attacking
- Dodge sideways (not backward) to avoid the charge
- Use the long recovery after the charge for your best damage window
White Bear of the High Mountains is a patience test. Players who respect its range and wait for proper openings will find a manageable encounter; those who press in aggressively will be repeatedly punished by the spin attack.
