Crimson Desert Research System Explained — How to Start Projects & Unlock Rewards
Complete guide to the Research system in Crimson Desert. Learn how to find research institutes, fund projects, and unlock powerful rewards like blueprints, stat boosts, and infinite arrows.
The Research system in Crimson Desert is one of the most overlooked mechanics by new players, yet it provides some of the most powerful permanent upgrades in the game. From increasing your max health cap to unlocking infinite arrows, research projects at settlement institutes offer rewards that fundamentally expand your capabilities.
How Research Works
Research projects are tied to specific research institutes located in settlements across Pywel. Each institute has a lead researcher who you must interact with to unlock access to their project catalogs. This usually involves completing an initial quest or providing a specific item.
Known Research Institutes
| Institute | Location | Unlock Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Scholastone Institute | Hernand | Complete initial researcher quest |
| Pororin Research Institute | Pororin Village | Speak to lead researcher |
| Gorthak Ironworks | Hernand region | Provide specific materials |
| Urdavah Research Institute | Urdavah settlement | Complete prerequisite quest |
| Institute of Delesyia | Delesyia region | Story progression |
Starting a Research Project
- Visit a research institute and talk to the lead researcher
- Browse the available projects — they are arranged in rows, where you must complete prerequisite projects before unlocking the next tier
- Fund the project with silver
- Wait for the project to complete — each takes a specific number of in-game hours
- Advance the day-night cycle (rest at campfires, sleep in beds) to speed up completion
- Return to collect your reward
Advanced Projects
Some higher-tier projects require additional knowledge before they become available. This involves:
- Speaking with other researchers in the settlement
- Observing specific objects or mechanisms
- Repairing broken machinery in the area
Check every research institute you discover immediately, even if you cannot afford to start projects right away. Some prerequisite quests can be completed passively while doing other activities in the area, so having them in your quest log early saves backtracking later.
Best Research Rewards
Essential Projects
- Max Health Increase — Raise your health cap beyond the normal limit. One of the most impactful permanent upgrades in the game.
- Infinite Arrows — The "Research on Getting Closer to Nature" project at Pororin rewards the Shadowleaf Disguise Blueprint and an infinite arrow supply. This eliminates arrow management entirely.
- New Dispatch Missions — Unlock missions where your Greymane comrades craft specific items or gather resources on your behalf.
Crafting Improvements
- Reduced Material Waste — Crafting projects that decrease the amount of materials lost during Refinement
- Enhanced Cooking — Projects that increase the energy gained from cooking recipes
Traversal and Gathering
- Cloudcart Enhancement — Allows Cloudcarts to soar into the Abyss
- Timber Yield Boost — Increases the amount of timber gathered while logging
- Beekeeper's Gear Blueprint — Unlocks beekeeping equipment
- Faded Abyss Artifact Blueprint — Allows crafting of respec items
Research projects require silver to fund and in-game time to complete. Do not try to rush every project at once — prioritize the Max Health Increase and Infinite Arrows projects first, as they provide the most immediate gameplay impact.
Research and Contribution Synergy
Research institutes exist within settlements, and your Contribution rank in each region affects what is available. Higher Contribution ranks can unlock advanced research tiers and exclusive projects. Complete side quests, faction missions, and bounties in a region to increase your standing and access more research options.
Dispatch Missions
Research also unlocks Dispatch Missions from your Greymane camp:
- Send recruits on missions to gather crafting materials
- Some dispatch missions produce unique items not available through other means
- Missions complete over in-game time while you pursue other activities
