How to Steal in Crimson Desert — Mask System, Reputation & Tips
Everything you need to know about stealing in Crimson Desert, including how to get a mask, pickpocketing NPCs, robbing strongboxes, and managing the reputation penalties.
Stealing in Crimson Desert is surprisingly deep — and surprisingly punishing. You cannot just walk up to a chest and take things. The game requires a specific item (a mask), imposes reputation penalties whether you get caught or not, and offers multiple types of theft ranging from pickpocketing to bank heists. This guide covers everything about the system and whether it is actually worth the risk.
The Mask Requirement
Before you can steal anything, you must equip a mask. Without it, the steal prompt simply does not appear on any container or NPC.
How to Get a Mask
- Loot from bandit corpses — Kill bandits throughout the world and check their drops
- Complete bounty quests — Some bounties reward masks
- Buy one from any Back Alley Shop for 10 copper/bronze coins
The Back Alley Shop in Hernand is the easiest source. Buy a mask early and keep it in your inventory — you never know when an opportunity will present itself.
Types of Stealing
Container Theft (Chests, Dressers, Shelves)
- Equip your mask
- Hold out your Lantern near a chest, dresser, or shelf
- The steal prompt appears on eligible containers
- Interact to take the item
- A red AOE crime zone appears on the minimap around the theft location
- Any NPC or guard inside the red zone witnesses the crime and may report you
- Leave the area before being confronted
Pickpocketing NPCs
- Equip your mask
- Sprint and bump into an NPC
- A pickpocket prompt appears immediately — press it quickly
- An alert zone triggers, requiring immediate escape
Other Criminal Activities
- Wagon Hijacking — Stolen wagons can only be sold to the Wagon Fence NPC near Hernand City
- Livestock Theft — Stolen animals are sold at the Livestock Black Market in southwest Hernand
- Bank Robbery — The Hernand Bank can be robbed with a mask and a key (both purchasable from a back-alley vendor). The strongbox contains raw silver.
Every theft costs -5 Contribution EXP whether you get caught or not. The penalty applies the moment you steal, not when detected. Even perfectly executed thefts permanently reduce your regional standing. Steal only when the item justifies the cost.

The Bounty System
Bounties are region-specific — crimes in Hernand do not affect your standing in Pailune.
- Small bounties — Guards ignore you
- Large bounties — Guards actively pursue and tackle you
- If apprehended — A minigame determines if you escape. Failing means jail time, and the bounty is automatically paid upon release
How to Clear a Bounty
- Visit any church confessional and buy a "Writ of Absolution" — pays off the bounty with gold
- Wait it out — Bounties slowly decay over time if you avoid new crimes
- Governance quests — Certain quest types accelerate bounty recovery
Restoring Reputation
Even without a bounty, your reduced Contribution EXP from theft has lasting effects:
- Higher merchant prices
- Hostile city guards
- Reduced quest availability
- Area access restrictions
You can restore reputation by:
- Greeting NPCs — A simple social interaction that slowly rebuilds trust
- Completing faction quests and bounty missions
- Liberating strongholds from hostile forces
If you want to steal for early-game gear, focus only on high-value targets like strongboxes and bank vaults. Never steal junk items — the -5 Contribution penalty is the same regardless of item value. One stolen diamond and one stolen potato cost the same reputation.
Should You Steal?
Early game: A few targeted thefts of strongboxes and the bank vault can jumpstart your silver reserves and provide gear upgrades before you can afford to buy them legitimately.
Mid to late game: Avoid stealing entirely. Contribution EXP becomes increasingly valuable for unlocking exclusive weapons, armor, and vendor access. The penalty from theft is simply not worth it once you have access to better income sources.
