Crimson Desert Crafting & Smithing Guide — Refinement, Alchemy, and Upgrades
Everything about the Refinement system in Crimson Desert, including upgrade tiers, material requirements, alchemy recipes, and the Abyss Artifact tradeoff.
The crafting system in Crimson Desert is centered around Refinement — upgrading your existing weapons and armor with raw materials at a blacksmith. Understanding the upgrade tiers, material economy, and the critical Abyss Artifact tradeoff at higher levels separates adequately geared players from optimized ones.
Refinement Overview
Refinement is handled at the blacksmith in Hernand town (town center) or at blacksmiths in other settlements. Every weapon and armor piece can be refined from its base level up to Refinement Level 10.
Key facts:
- Refinement costs no Silver — only raw materials
- Past Level 4, Refinement also requires spending Abyss Artifacts (the same resource used for skill points)
- You can view required materials for any item via Inventory → Inspect → Refinement Information
The Duplicate Sacrifice Method
An alternative to gathering materials: you can refine a weapon by melting down an exact duplicate of that item. If you find two copies of the same weapon, sacrifice one to upgrade the other. This bypasses the material requirements entirely.
Before selling duplicate weapons, check if they match any gear you are currently using. Melting a duplicate for Refinement is almost always more valuable than the gold you would get from selling it.
Materials by Equipment Type
Different equipment types require different materials:
| Equipment Type | Primary Materials | How to Gather |
|---|---|---|
| Plate Armor & Weapons | Iron Ore, Copper Ore | Pickaxe on mountain ore deposits |
| Wooden Shields & Bows | Wood, Timber | Logging axe on trees (3 swings to fell) |
| Leather Armor & Jewelry | Hides, Bones, Garnet, Azurite | Hunting animals, mining gems |
| Soft Clothes | Cloth Pieces, Fleece | Purchase from vendors or loot from enemies |
Refinement Levels and the Abyss Artifact Tradeoff
Levels 1–4 (Materials Only)
These levels require only raw materials — no tradeoffs. Upgrade your primary weapon and armor to Level 4 as soon as you have the materials.
Levels 5–10 (Materials + Abyss Artifacts)
Starting at Level 5, each Refinement level costs Abyss Artifacts in addition to raw materials. Since Abyss Artifacts are also your skill points, every point spent on Refinement is a point not spent on unlocking combat skills.
This creates a genuine strategic decision:
- Early game: Prioritize skills (especially Keen Senses) over Refinement
- Mid game: Balance skill unlocks with Refinement Level 5–6 on your primary weapon
- Late game: Push Refinement higher once your core skill tree is filled out
Do not push Refinement past Level 4 before unlocking Keen Senses Level 1–3 (Parry, Enhanced Dodge, Counter). These defensive skills are more valuable than the stat increase from high Refinement. Spend Abyss Artifacts on skills first, Refinement second.
Alchemy System
Separate from Refinement, the Alchemy system lets you craft consumables and special items at Witch cauldrons. Cauldrons are located in:
- Shadow's Whisper Cave (north of Hernand)
- Inside Hernand City
Key Alchemy Recipes
| Item | Ingredients | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Palmar Pill | Various materials | 30% chance to revive on death |
| Faded Abyss Artifact | 1x Abyss Cell + 2x Mercury | Respec token — resets all skill points |
| Haiden's Lesser Elixir | Various materials | Stat-boosting consumable |
| Astrid's Lesser Elixir | Various materials | Stat-boosting consumable |
| Meliara's Lesser Elixir | Various materials | Restorative consumable |
Alchemy recipes are discovered through exploration, missions, and story progression. The Faded Abyss Artifact recipe specifically requires the "Research on the Abyss Energy Restoration Phenomenon" blueprint.
Gathering Tools
You need tools to gather Refinement materials:
- Pickaxe — Costs 31 copper coins from the Provisioner's Shop in Hernand. Also obtainable free via the "Rhett's Request" side quest.
- Logging Axe — Costs 29 copper coins from the Provisioner's Shop. Free from talking to the Hernand blacksmith.
Gathering Techniques
- Mining: Equip pickaxe, hold aim until reticle turns blue, attack to swing. Multiple strikes break ore. Watch for ore rolling downhill.
- Logging: Equip axe, aim at tree, 3 swings to fell. Step back when it drops. Chop trunk into segments, then harvest.
- Shortcut: The Force Palm or Force Current abilities instantly destroy ore deposits and trees. Uses Stamina/Spirit but is significantly faster than tool gathering.
Refinement Priority Guide
- Refine your primary melee weapon to Level 4 — Cheap, material-only, and provides the biggest combat improvement
- Refine your bow to Level 3 — Several boss fights require ranged damage
- Refine your chest armor to Level 4 — Largest DEF increase of any armor slot
- Unlock Keen Senses 1–3 with Abyss Artifacts — Before spending any Artifacts on Refinement
- Push primary weapon to Level 6–7 — Once core skills are unlocked
- Refine remaining armor pieces — Helmet, gloves, boots
Vendor Material Restocking
Rhett and Mineral Shops (unlocked after liberating Cairn House and Karin Quarry) restock every 2–3 in-game days. Sleep at campfires or beds to advance the clock. Iron Ore is available from vendors at 18 coins per ore for when you need a quick top-up.
