Crimson Desert Oongka Guide — How to Unlock, Abilities & Best Build

Complete Oongka guide for Crimson Desert covering how to unlock him in Chapter 7, his dual greataxe and arm cannon abilities, Rampage and Rage skills, and the best heavy melee build.

Oongka is the third and final playable character in Crimson Desert — a massive orc bruiser who dual-wields two-handed weapons and obliterates everything in his path. While Kliff is technique and Damiane is speed, Oongka is raw, unrelenting power. His Rampage cleaves through entire groups, his Rage grants super armor, and his arm cannon brings ranged devastation. This guide covers how to unlock him, his full kit, and the optimal build.

How to Unlock Oongka

Oongka's unlock happens through main story progression in Chapter 7 — no side quests or hidden requirements.

Chapter 6 (Temporary Ally)

You encounter and fight alongside Oongka during Chapter 6 events. He is an NPC companion at this point — you cannot control him yet.

Chapter 7 (Temporary Unlock)

During the "Homecoming" quest at Ashclaw Keep, Kliff is incapacitated after the Myurdin fight. Control automatically transfers to Oongka for a mandatory story segment. After this sequence, Oongka is locked again.

Permanent Unlock

Complete the side quest "Gentle Sound of Flowing River" after the Chapter 7 events. Once this quest is finished, Oongka is permanently available as a playable character.

WARNING

Do NOT skip the "Gentle Sound of Flowing River" side quest. The main story pushes you forward aggressively after Chapter 7, and this quest is easy to overlook. Check your quest journal immediately after the Ashclaw Keep events — without completing this quest, Oongka remains locked permanently.

Starting Equipment

  • Dekarr Greataxe — Massive two-handed axe
  • Orc Blaster — Arm cannon for ranged combat

Preferred Weapon Types

Greataxes, greathammers, arm cannon (Orc Blaster)

Combat Abilities

Melee Abilities

Oongka's melee attacks are slow but devastatingly powerful:

  • Rampage — Cleave through entire groups of enemies with sweeping attacks. The premier mob-clearing ability in the game.
  • Dual-Wielding Mastery — Oongka can cleave with dual two-handed weapons simultaneously — a feat unique to him. Imagine swinging two greataxes at once.
  • Standard Combos — Slower than Kliff or Damiane, but each hit deals significantly more damage

Defensive Abilities

  • Rage — Grants super armor, preventing Oongka from being staggered by incoming attacks. This fundamentally changes the defensive approach — instead of dodging and parrying like Kliff, Oongka simply powers through hits while dealing damage.

Ranged Combat

  • Orc Blaster — An arm cannon that fires explosive projectiles. Use it to open combat encounters and soften targets before closing to melee range.
  • Scatter Shot — Powerful cannon blast for ranged destruction

Traversal

  • Jetpack — Oongka uses a jetpack for mobility, reflecting his different approach to traversal compared to Kliff's climbing and Damiane's double jump.
TIP

Oongka's Rage super armor is the key to his combat identity. When Rage is active, you can ignore enemy attacks entirely and focus on landing your heaviest combos. Time Rage activation for boss attack windows that would force Kliff to dodge — Oongka can just power through and keep swinging.

Best Build for Oongka

Siege Titan Build (Greataxe + Arm Cannon)

The recommended build maximizes Oongka's area damage and survivability:

  1. Maximize Rampage — Invest points into making cleave attacks hit harder and wider
  2. Upgrade Rage — Longer duration and greater damage reduction during super armor
  3. Arm Cannon upgrades — Improve Orc Blaster damage for ranged openers

Mountain Breaker Build (Hammer + Arm Cannon)

An alternative focusing on single-target damage:

  1. Hammer mastery — Invest in greathammer damage for maximum single-hit values
  2. Stagger skills — Hammer attacks stagger enemies more reliably than axes
  3. Arm Cannon support — Same ranged utility as the Siege Titan build

Abyss Core Priorities

Focus on cores that boost attack power and reduce skill cooldowns. Oongka's damage comes in bursts during Rage windows, so cooldown reduction lets you cycle Rage more frequently.

Armor Considerations

Oongka's evasion is naturally low — he is not meant to dodge. Equip the heaviest plate armor available with maximum physical defense values. Stack defense and health to complement Rage's damage reduction.

When to Use Oongka

Oongka Excels At:

  • Mob clearing — Rampage cleaves through groups instantly
  • Slow, heavy-hitting bosses where trading blows works
  • Situations where raw damage solves the problem
  • Players who prefer a tanky, aggressive playstyle

Oongka Struggles With:

  • Fast, agile bosses that punish slow recoveries
  • Mechanics requiring precision (parrying, counter-attacks)
  • Traversal-based challenges that need Kliff's climbing or Damiane's double jump
