How to Beat Goyen — Boss Strategy Guide | Crimson Desert
Full strategy guide for defeating Goyen in Crimson Desert Chapter 9. Learn his devastating attack patterns, gear recommendations, and the best dodging strategies for this challenging encounter.
Goyen is the definitive skill-check boss of Chapter 9: The Sage of the Desert. Wielding a sword and shield, he mirrors Kliff's own combat style but hits with terrifying force. A single mistake against Goyen can result in a quick death, demanding near-perfect dodging and patience.
Location and Context
Goyen is encountered during the main quest in The Crimson Desert region. His dedicated arena is located deep within a desert cavern. Fortunately, there is a Fast Travel Point directly outside his arena, making the inevitable run-backs quick and painless. Ensure you activate it before stepping inside.
Preparation
Recommended Gear
- Heavy Plate Armor — Refine all your armor pieces to at least Level 7. There is no weight penalty in Crimson Desert, so maximize your defense to survive his one-hit potential.
- Upgraded Sword and Shield — Ensure your weapons are also highly refined. You will need to make your brief attack windows count.
Stats and Skills
- Invest your early Abyss Artifacts heavily into Health and Stamina.
- Evasive Roll and Keen Senses are mandatory for this fight, as dodging is far safer than blocking.
- Avoid relying on parries unless you have completely mastered the timing; the penalty for failing a parry against Goyen is usually death.
Consumables
- 100-200+ Grilled Meat: You will be healing constantly. The basic Grilled Meat (crafted with just 1 raw meat) heals for 140 HP and is the most cost-effective healing item in the game.
- Palmer Pills: Keep a few on your hotbar. These allow for self-revival if you make a fatal mistake.
Goyen's Attack Patterns & Mechanics
Goyen possesses a single, massive health bar and does not have distinct phases. Instead, he relentless pursues you with a lethal moveset:
The Midair Kick
Goyen leaps into the air and delivers a devastating plunging kick. This attack tracks heavily and deals massive damage. Dodge sideways right before he lands; do not attempt to block it, as it will instantly crush your stamina.
The Shockwave Smash (The One-Hit Kill)
His most iconic and dangerous move. Goyen jumps high and smashes his weapon into the ground, creating a massive AoE shockwave.
- The Catch: This attack is almost always immediately followed by a second midair kick. You must be prepared to dodge through the shockwave and immediately dodge again to evade the follow-up kick.
Standard Melee Combos
He strings together rapid sword strikes and shield bashes. For these, it is recommended to dodge forward and to the right. This positions you slightly behind his shield arm, taking you out of his tracking arc and setting you up for a counter-attack.
Best Strategy
Wait for the Whiff
The safest way to defeat Goyen is to play entirely reactively. Wait for him to execute one of his major attacks (like the midair kick or shockwave smash sequence) and visually confirm that the combo has ended.
The Punish Window
When he whiffs an attack, he is briefly vulnerable.
- Close the distance immediately.
- Unleash four heavy attacks.
- Follow up with 1-2 fast light attacks if you have the stamina.
- Immediately roll away and reset the neutral game. Do not get greedy—Goyen will punish overextension with fatal results.
Heal Through the Animations
You can consume food while simultaneously attacking or dodging. If you take a hit, do not panic-retreat. Pop a Grilled Meat while continuing your dodge sequence to keep your health topped up.
Loot Drops
Defeating Goyen rewards you with one of the most powerful items in the game, along with upgrades for your Abyss skill tree.
| Item | Drop Rate | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Goyen's Advice Abyss Artifact | 100% | Used to upgrade weapon-specific combat operations in the Abyss tree |
| Fated Shadow (One-Handed Sword) | 100% | Found in the hidden dead-end room behind the boss arena after the fight. The strongest starting ATK sword (25) in the game. |
Crucial Secret: Do not leave the area immediately after the fight! Proceed to the back of the arena and up the steps into a small, cave-like living quarter. The legendary Fated Shadow sword is resting on a weapon stand inside.
