Fishing in Crimson Desert is a fully developed life skill with its own mini-game, multiple rod tiers, and practical rewards. Fish are used in cooking recipes that provide some of the best healing food in the game, making fishing a genuinely useful activity rather than a throwaway minigame.

How to Get a Fishing Rod

Free Fishing Rod

The easiest way to get your first rod is through Annabella's Request quest in Hernand. Annabella provides a free basic fishing rod that you keep permanently after completing her quest. You can also find a rod resting near wooden crates by the river in Hernand after the prologue.

Purchased Rods

Provisioner's Shop (Hernand) — Buy a basic rod for 15 copper pieces. The shop is located in front of the Blacksmith.
Fishing Villages — Marked by boat icons on the map. Fishing vendors sell rods here.
Nas River fishing shop — Another 15 copper rod available at the dock.

Better Rods

Fine Fishing Rod — Buy the blueprint from Grimrak at the Back Alley Shop in Hernand for 10 silver. Also available through your Greymane camp.
Porin Fishing Rod — Unlocked through the Research system at a settlement research institute.

How to Equip Your Rod

Open your equipment wheel (F2 on keyboard, Left D-pad on controller) and select the fishing rod to equip it. You switch to fishing mode while it is equipped — swap back to your weapon when you need to fight.

How to Fish — Step by Step

Step 1: Find Water

You can fish in any body of water — rivers, ponds, lakes, or oceans. Choose deep, open water without rocks or fallen trees to avoid breaking your line. The bridge north of Hernand is an excellent early spot.

Step 2: Cast Your Line

Hold the cast button (LT on controller, Q then left-click on PC) to aim. A blue circle indicates a valid casting spot. A red cross means the cast will auto-reel. Release to cast.

Step 3: Wait for a Bite

Be patient. You will see three splashes or feel a controller vibration when a fish approaches. A prompt appears on screen when the fish bites.

Step 4: Hook the Fish

When the prompt appears, quickly press the hook button (RT on controller, right-click on PC). Timing matters — too slow and the fish escapes.

Step 5: Fight the Fish

This is the skill-check phase. Use the left stick (controller) or WASD (keyboard) to pull your rod in the opposite direction the fish is swimming. Do not reel during this phase — you are tiring the fish out.

Step 6: Reel In

Once the fish stops splashing and the water calms, rapidly reel in by rotating the right stick clockwise (controller) or scrolling the mouse wheel (PC). If the fish starts fighting again, stop reeling and repeat the fight step.

TIP

Watch the tension indicator on your line. If it turns red, you are pulling too hard and the line will snap. Ease off the directional input when tension is high, and reel aggressively when the fish is calm.

Bare-Hand Fishing

In shallow water, you can spot fish visually and catch them with your bare hands:

Wade into shallow water
Look for fish swimming near the surface
Press the interact button (E on keyboard, X on Xbox, Square on PS5) when close

This method is surprisingly effective and works especially well for quest-specific fish. No rod required.

WARNING

Bare-hand fishing only works in shallow water where fish are visually visible. Deep-water fishing always requires a rod. Many of the best cooking ingredients come from deep-water species.
