Crimson Desert Reputation & Stealing Guide — Factions, Crime, and Bounties

Everything about the reputation system in Crimson Desert, including the 110 factions, 5-tier reputation scale, stealing mechanics, mask requirements, and bounty recovery.

Crimson Desert has a deep reputation and crime system with 110 distinct factions across the continent of Pywel. Your standing with each faction affects merchant prices, available quests, NPC behavior, and whether guards help or attack you. This guide covers how reputation works, how to steal, and how to recover from a life of crime.

The Five-Tier Reputation Scale

Every faction uses the same five-tier system:

TierEffects
AllianceBest merchant prices, exclusive quests, faction troops assist in combat
FriendlyGood prices, most quests available
NeutralStandard prices, standard access
HostileInflated prices, some quests locked, guards suspicious
WarMerchants refuse service, guards attack on sight

Most factions start at Neutral. Your home faction, the Greymanes, starts at Friendly and naturally reaches Alliance through story progression.

How to Gain Reputation

  • Complete faction quests — Main and side quests for a specific faction award the most reputation
  • Liberate strongholds — Taking bandit camps and hostile fortifications increases standing with the region's dominant faction
  • Help faction members — Random encounter rescues and assistance events
  • Bounty missions — Repeatable bounties from tavern boards award small reputation gains
  • Defeating bosses — Major boss kills improve regional standing

How to Lose Reputation

  • Stealing — Each theft costs approximately -5 Contribution EXP, whether caught or not
  • Attacking NPCs — Hitting a non-hostile NPC costs -30 Contribution
  • Completing rival faction quests — Some factions have conflicting interests
  • Criminal acts — Accumulated crimes reduce standing in the region where committed

Key Factions

Greymanes (Start: Friendly)

Your own mercenary faction. Reach Alliance through main story progression, territory liberation, and rescuing scattered members. Alliance grants elite military support in combat encounters.

House Celeste (Start: Neutral)

Complete the "Liberate Roothold" quest to reach Friendly. Further advancement unlocks armory access and political contacts in Demeniss.

Goldleaves Guild (Start: Neutral)

Defeat Split Horn at Unicorn Cliffs for Friendly. Complete Shakatu's merchant quests to reach Alliance, which unlocks a unique trading network and rare material imports.

Hostile Factions (Black Bears, Wolf Trackers, Desert Cult)

Start at War or Hostile but can be de-escalated through diplomatic quests. Whether to pursue diplomacy or combat depends on the rewards each path offers.

TIP

Focus on reaching Alliance with the Goldleaves Guild early. The unique trading network unlocks rare material imports that significantly accelerate your gear progression. Start with the Split Horn fight at Unicorn Cliffs.

Hernandian Contribution System

Separate from faction reputation, each region tracks a Contribution metric based on your overall actions in that area. Contribution is tracked independently per region and determines access to regional Contribution shops that sell unique weapons, armor, and consumables.

Contribution increases through all positive actions (quests, bounties, boss kills, exploration) and decreases through crimes.

The Stealing System

Stealing in Crimson Desert requires preparation — you cannot pickpocket bare-faced.

Mask Requirement

Crimes are locked until you equip a mask. Masks can be:

  • Found on bandit corpses throughout the world
  • Purchased from any Back Alley Shop for 10 copper/bronze coins

Equip the mask before attempting any theft. Without it, the steal prompt will not appear.

How to Steal from Containers

  1. Equip your mask
  2. Hold out your Lantern near a chest, dresser, or shelf
  3. The steal prompt appears on eligible containers
  4. Interact to steal the item
  5. A red AOE crime zone appears on the minimap around the theft location
  6. Any NPCs or guards inside the radius witness the act and may report you
  7. Leave the area before being confronted

How to Pickpocket

  1. Equip your mask
  2. Sprint and bump into an NPC
  3. The pickpocket prompt appears immediately — press it quickly
  4. An alert zone triggers, requiring immediate escape

Other Criminal Activities

  • Wagon Hijacking — Stolen wagons can only be sold to a Wagon Fence NPC (the only buyer)
  • Livestock Theft — Stolen livestock sold at the Livestock Black Market
WARNING

Every theft costs -5 Contribution EXP whether you get caught or not. The penalty is applied the moment you steal, not when detected. This means even perfectly executed thefts reduce your regional standing. Steal only when the item is worth the permanent Contribution hit.

Consequences and Bounties

Crime Penalties

CrimePenalty
Theft-5 Contribution per item
Assault on innocent NPC-30 Contribution
MurderSevere variable penalties

Bounty System

Bounties are region-specific — one area's bounty does not affect others.

  • Small bounties — Guards ignore you
  • Large bounties — Guards actively pursue and attempt to tackle/restrain you
  • If apprehended — A minigame determines if you escape. Failing results in jail time and the bounty is automatically paid upon release.

Clearing Bounties

Three ways to remove a bounty:

  1. Visit any church confessional and select "Buy Writ of Absolution" — pays off the bounty immediately with gold
  2. Natural decay — Bounties slowly decrease over time if you avoid committing new crimes
  3. Governance quests — Completing certain quest types accelerates bounty recovery

Strategic Considerations

Should You Steal?

Early game, a few well-placed thefts can give you gear upgrades before you could afford to buy them. But the -5 Contribution per theft adds up, and low Contribution means:

  • Higher merchant prices
  • Hostile city guards
  • Reduced quest availability
  • Area access restrictions

Recommendation: Steal sparingly for high-value targets only. Never steal junk items — the Contribution penalty is the same regardless of item value.

Faction Conflicts

Some factions have conflicting interests. Gaining reputation with the Desert Bandits in Demeniss reduces your standing with the Sandport authorities. You cannot maximize every faction, so choose based on which rewards matter most to your build.

The 110 factions across Pywel create a complex web of alliances and rivalries. Talk to faction NPCs to understand relationships before committing to one side.
