How to Beat Kailok the Hornsplitter — Boss Strategy Guide | Crimson Desert
Full strategy guide for defeating Kailok the Hornsplitter in Crimson Desert. Learn his attack patterns, gear recommendations, and the best skills to use for this Chapter 2 boss fight.
Kailok the Hornsplitter is the final boss of Chapter 2: The End of Greed, and he is the first encounter in Crimson Desert that will seriously punish players who have neglected their fundamentals. This massive ogre-like brute guards the Goldleaf Guildhouse in the Hernand region and demands mastery of parrying, dodging, and stamina management to defeat.
Location and Context
Kailok is fought at the Goldleaf Guildhouse during the climax of the "End of Greed" main quest in Hernand. The fight is mandatory to progress the story. Before entering the arena, there is a Grindstone nearby — interact with it for a temporary Attack Buff that will carry into the fight.
Preparation
Recommended Gear
- Sword of the Wolf — Strong melee option available by this point
- Bekker Shield — Essential for blocking and parrying
- Grey Wolf Bow — For punishing Kailok at range during recovery windows
- Bolton Plate Helm and Armor — Best defense available in Chapter 2
- Canta Plate Gloves and Boots — Complement the Bolton set
Stats and Skills
- Invest Abyss Artifacts into Health and Stamina — both are critical for surviving Kailok's heavy hits and maintaining your block
- Force Palm Level 3 (Expertise) is the single most important skill for this fight. The three-hit combo stuns Kailok and creates massive damage windows
- Evasive Roll — You may learn this during the fight itself. Use it to escape combos when a parry fails
- Pump Kick — Useful for disrupting his attacks and serving as a combo finisher
Consumables
Stock up on healing food: Grilled Meat, Steamed Eggs, or Clear Soup. Bring at least 30-40 portions — this is a long fight.
Kailok's wind wave attacks deal chip damage even through a perfect block. Always dodge these instead of blocking. Save your shield for his melee combos where parrying creates counter-attack opportunities.
Kailok's Attack Patterns
Standard Melee Combos
Kailok chains sword swings in predictable sequences. Parry the first hit to stagger him, then land one or two quick attacks. Do not commit to a full combo — he recovers quickly and will punish overextension.
Wind Waves and Ranged Attacks
Kailok frequently jumps backward and launches wind slashes across the arena. These cannot be reliably blocked — the chip damage will drain your health. Dodge sideways or circle around him to avoid these entirely.
Red Glint Attacks
Watch Kailok's weapon carefully for a red glint, which signals one of two dangerous attacks:
- Charged AoE (sword held to the side) — He charges an area attack that fires multiple blue projectiles. Dodge through this rather than blocking.
- Dash Combo (sword held in front) — He jumps back, launches two wind slashes, then performs a dash attack. Dodge the slashes, then parry the dash for a punish window.
Counter-Attack Warning
After you land two consecutive hits, Kailok's weapon may flash red. This signals an incoming counter-attack. Immediately use Force Palm to stagger him and interrupt the counter, opening him up for burst damage.
Evasive Roll (Kailok's)
When you deal sustained damage, Kailok performs his own evasive roll. Immediately raise your shield to lock the camera and prepare for his follow-up attack.
Ultimate Mode
Kailok glows blue and becomes temporarily invulnerable, then relentlessly sends wind waves. Do not engage — maintain your distance and focus purely on dodging until this phase ends.
Best Strategy
The Force Palm Loop
The core strategy revolves around Force Palm Level 3:
- Wait for Kailok to finish an attack combo
- Land Force Palm's three-hit combo — the third strike stuns him with a distinct "thonk" sound
- Follow up with a full melee combo while he is stunned
- Watch for the yellow finisher bar beneath his health — when it fills, he collapses
- Execute a Finisher (Left Click + Right Click on PC, or R1+R2 on console) for massive damage
- Retreat, manage stamina, and repeat
Stamina Management
This fight is a stamina war. Never drain your stamina bar completely — always reserve enough for at least one dodge or block. If your stamina is low, disengage completely and let it regenerate before re-engaging.
When Kailok initiates his wind wave barrage during Ultimate Mode, use this downtime to eat food and regenerate. Do not waste this window trying to close distance — he is invulnerable during this phase anyway.
